“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

~ Jimmy Dean

If you’ve felt daunted, depressed or even disgusted by polarizing people, toxic chants and negative news, you’re not alone.

These days, much of society is getting caught up in the churning muck of the collective, yet fractured, human psyche. This social turmoil, borne and stoked by deep-seated fears, drains our energy, stifles our creativity and dims everyone’s hope for the future.

There is another way. Rather than surrendering to prevailing, negative energies, we can choose to step away. Taking a moment to breathe in fresh air, we can remove our attention from chaos and discontent. And we can renew ourselves from within.

By reclaiming just a moment of personal space, we can rediscover inner sunshine by reigniting our souls. We can inspire ourselves.

Having to exercise this process throughout most of my life, and through several time periods of emotional stress, I offer you this brief podcast today.

What do you do to avoid the political turmoil Maura? I find myself completely surrounded in it and somehow I tend to enjoy it through fascination of people's political views.

For most of my life, I sensed that my thoughts (which unify rather than divide and which look beyond the surface to the greater, behind-the-scenes machinations) were not yet ready for "prime time" consumption :) The world is addicted to polarity and, as you can readily see, the clearest evidence of that polarity shows up in politics. A life long learner, I enjoy listening closely to what others have to say, then peppering them with additional questions to further understand their perspective. Finally, I would offer a fact or a bit of new information that might not marry up with their current perspective. When I do, I can take the role of either side. I generally ask things like, "Had you heard of _____?" or "Were you familiar with the _________ report on the subject?" My intent is never to proselytize, but to encourage other people's deeper investigation and inspire critical thinking. In a world accustomed to following the crowd, there's nothing more exciting than seeing individuals emerging in the light of their own brilliance -- and free thought.
